Dastkaar'09

METAL WORK

These were- a pair of ice tongs and a sindoor box with a mirror.

We visited the Dastkaar exhibition on Monday 10th August.
There were craftsmen from all over India exhibiting and selling their work.
We came across very interesting works and developed product ideas from them.
Our main concern was with the bamboo and cane workers, but it was impossible not to explore further!

There were people selling lamps made out of dried bottle gourd (lauki) shells.

There were colourful curtains made of shaped stuffed cloth decorated with sequins.

There was also a stall dedicated to just kites. There were very unusual and interesting kite designs there.

A stall from Bihar had pictures (mostly Krishna and radha) made with khus khus grass stems. The work was intricate and done with tweezers.

One stall from the northeast had products like mattresses, cushions, dustbins, bags, etc. made from water reed.

A stall from kerala had wall hangings with applique work and things made out of coconut fibre. The monkey was particularly interesting.
