INITIAL RESEARCH
1. Go to 5 popular stores which sell bamboo/cane/metal products and extract information on:
-What sells most
-What prices they sell at
-What kinds of designs they use (traditional/modern)
What products they make
Tabulate the data.
2. Visit the craftsmen where they work. Observe:
-Lifestyle
-Techniques
-Problems faced
-System of working and effectiveness
-Types of products
-Designs used
-How they sell
Where they sell
Tabulate the data.
3. Compare the data.
FIND SOLUTIONS
Based on the initial research, identify the following:
-What are the popular designs
-Are they modern or traditional or mixed
-What can be the solutions to their problems
-How can the craftsmen improve their products to make them saleable
-Where and how can they sell their products for better profits
PROTOTYPES
Create prototypes(not too many) of products, and go out and try to sell them.
See what price people are willing to pay for them, and ask them what kinds of things they would
like to buy.
Tabulate data.
FINAL ACTION
After finding solutions, and making prototypes, carry out the final actions.
-Come up with good designs that could be incorporated in their products
-Design different products that they could create
-Design a more effective system of working (very basic and simple)
-Find ways to combine different media- bamboo, metal, textiles, araca leaves etc.
-Help them make their products more finished
-Help set up a system by which others can learn the craft
SWOT
Strength: It is possible to execute in 3-4 weeks (Products)
Weakness: The craftsmen may not like the intervention
Opportunity: The brief is not too rigid and gives me the space to alter things easily
Threat: The time might not be enough to design a working system
